Growing Our Team: How We’re Training Our New Choir Directors

At The Contemporary Chorus, we are dedicated to offering the best possible experience for our members. From the glitz and glamour of our concert, recording day, and local events to the creative energy of our workshop days, we love bringing incredible musical moments to life. But at the core of everything we do, we aim to make our weekly rehearsals a real highlight of the week—something to look forward to, a space to feel uplifted, and a chance to connect with local people through music. This has been our ethos from the very beginning of our choir.
As we enter an exciting new chapter, expanding our team of directors and launching new choirs in April, we want to ensure that the same family feel, creativity, relaxed and uplifting atmosphere that defines The Contemporary Chorus is maintained across all of our choirs—both existing and new.
Training the Next Generation of Contemporary Chorus Directors
We’re currently in the process of appointing two new directors to lead our upcoming choirs. To find the perfect fit, we’ve conducted extensive interviews with the goal of finding candidates that have extensive experience in choral direction that also demonstrate an understanding of our ethos and the specific nature of what we do at The Contemporary Chorus.
Before stepping into their new roles, our prospective directors have taken part in an intensive training and induction day—a deep dive into what makes The Contemporary Chorus special. This includes discussions about:
How we run rehearsals—the specific process we utilise to rehears our songs.
Exploring the unique atmosphere we create—ensuring every session is welcoming, energizing, and rewarding.
Embracing our core values—so that every Contemporary Chorus rehearsal feels familiar, no matter which location you attend.
We’re incredibly proud to have built a cohesive, supportive, and vibrant musical community, and we’re committed to ensuring this remains consistent as we grow.
Seeing the Magic in Action
Following their initial training, our candidates have had the opportunity to experience The Contemporary Chorus in full swing by attending a rehearsal with one of our existing choirs. This has been a brilliant moment for us—showcasing the incredible sound you all create and sharing the energy (and laughter) that define our sessions.
Following this we’ve handed over the reins—allowing our prospective directors to experience what it’s like to guide a Contemporary Chorus session firsthand. This has also been an invaluable opportunity for Dan and I to see their capacity to implement the key points of their training ensuring we uphold the high standards and unique atmosphere that make our choir special.
